Plastic vs Cardboard Boxes When Moving

plastic-and-cardboard-boxes

On your search for the most reliable self-storage facility when moving, a common question that comes up is what type of boxes you should use for storage and organisation?

When you don’t pack things correctly, things inside can end up broken, moulded, or pretty useless. Why? This is due to careless packaging and impractical use of storage boxes.

Your local self storage facility in Wollongong does not want you to experience this, so we’ve prepared a guide on what’s best when it comes to plastic and cardboard containers when storing and organising items.

Both are great materials that scientists and engineers have been developing for decades.

Which is the best one for you? To answer that, here are some things to consider.

Plastic Boxes

In comparison to cardboard boxes, plastic boxes are known for their full resistance to water. Since water causes dampness and extra moisture to some materials, keeping things inside plastic containers will diminish the chances of finding mould on objects such as clothing.

The use of plastic boxes also keeps your things from being infested by insects. So when you arrange boxes in an indoor storage unit, you won’t have to worry about finding cockroaches and other creepy crawlies on your valued treasures.

To add more to the magic brought by plastic boxes during storage, they are best used to organise things. How? Since this type of box comes in various colours, you can use this to your advantage. Categorise the contents of the boxes by colour, for example:

  • Red – clothing
  • Blue – kitchen and dining sets
  • Yellow – books and stationery
  • Green – decorative items
  • Pink – miscellaneous

Moreover, plastic boxes come with lids. These boxes do not need to be taped in order to make sure that nothing penetrates the items kept inside.

Cardboard Boxes

Plastic containers are indeed useful, but they have a downside: they are non-biodegradable. They’re less environmentally-friendly compared to cardboard boxes.

Also, cardboard boxes are less expensive, meaning you get more storage boxes at a lesser price! Sometimes, you can even get them for free if you try to ask store managers around you, making them more practical.

Compared to plastic containers, cardboard boxes are best to use when moving items. If your chosen local storage units are a little far, it will be easier for you to transport them using cartons.

Also, cardboard boxes are very simple and easy to utilise. You just need tape such as duct tape or packaging tape to seal them in well. To label these boxes, you just need to write on them with your marker.

Finally, Plastic vs Cardboard Boxes?

There will be lots of factors that will affect your decision. What are the conditions around your public storage unit? How long will you be storing your items? How about the material of these items, are they perishable or fragile? How much is your budget? Once you have answers to these questions, you will know which one is the best for you.

If you ever need assistance with deciding on what type of boxes are best for your storage needs, Permian Self Storage in Wollongong would be more than glad to help. Contact the team today.

Getting The Right Self Storage Facility When Moving House

Getting-The-Right-Self-Storage-Facility-When-Moving-House

There is a lot to consider when moving house, from the resources you will need to utilise, to the time and effort necessary to make it successful. You won’t want to overlook anything important.

During this time, you’ll find that the convenience brought about by a self storage facility can also help you to not miss a thing while in the process of moving to another house. To reduce the stress, here are some helpful reminders you can consider.

Planning

Before storing your items or placing them in self storage units, undergoing thorough planning helps you organise and optimise the available spaces. As items differ in value, weight, fragility, and necessity, planning gives you the heads up you need in order to properly store your items.

Inventory

Another important aspect aside from planning is making an inventory of all the items you want to store. This allows you to track your items in case something goes missing or is misplaced. Provided that you have already made a record of your items, you can make it more convenient to check up on the items when you need them by including their location within the self storage facility as well as details describing them.

Labels

When storing items, you need to make sure that all objects with similar qualities are grouped together especially when moving house. Items for the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and so on should be separated from each other to avoid confusion when arranging them again.

Protection

Some of the positive qualities of self storage facilities include tight security and surveillance, pest and facility maintenance, and resistance to changing weather conditions. If you’re looking for the best storage facilities, Permian Self Storage in Wollongong can provide you with quality services, from choosing your storage space, to buying and using the necessary equipment, transporting your items, as well as assisting you with personal storage needs.

Maximise Spaces

If you want to maximise the available space, proper arrangement of your items is a must. This task needs creativity and patience. It is always advisable to stack items vertically and leave spaces in between to allow them some air. Always put the most needed items near the entrance of the facility in order to avoid unnecessary hassle when looking for them.

Time

Above everything, make sure you are able to make an ample amount of time for planning, inventory, arranging the items, labelling items based on their details, and looking for a reliable self storage facility. You also need to consider the accessibility of your potential local storage units to avoid wasting time during transit.

Conclusion

Moving house can be a tedious process, especially when it comes to storing your things while you prepare your new place. But there are ways to avoid exhaustion by planning ahead and organising your items efficiently with the help of these storage tips.

To guarantee efficiency and convenience, ask for assistance from a professional self storage service provider. Permian Self Storage in Wollongong is here to provide you with a smooth storage experience. Contact the team today.

Removalists vs Truck/Trailer Hire

Whether you’re moving to a new house, moving overseas or just need some extra space to store those excess items, the time has come, and you have decided to rent a self storage unit. Big or small, how will you get your items to your new storage unit? Will it be through hiring removalists or taking advantage of our complimentary truck and trailer hire*. However, you decide to move your precious belongings, here are some tips for both in determining which is better for you.

Removalists

There are five main reasons to consider when deciding whether hiring a removalist is the right fit for you.

Cost – In some areas, hiring removalist companies can be expensive, but due to the vast competition especially in metro areas, competitive pricing can help you and your moving efforts.

Convenience – Hiring removalist companies means you are hiring professional movers who have done moves time and time again. The majority of removalist companies’ complete fitness and health checks to ensure safety for all. They also have the equipment and training to be able to lift and manage large and heavy items.

Time – As mentioned before removalists companies do this time and time again, so they get it done quickly and efficiently.

Trust – Trusting strangers with your beloved and sentimental items can be a tricky task, however there is one important component to help trust removalists. Do your research. Ask around for recommendations, looking at the reviews and understanding the overall reputation of the removalist company. Doing your own research will ensure you are getting the value for money you deserve, and you paid for.

Insurance – Most removalist companies are insured, giving you peace of mind that your goods will be protected, if anything should go wrong.

Truck/Trailer Hire

If you have access to a truck or trailer or, are a customer of Permian Self Storage and can use our complimentary truck and trailer service*, you may find it best for you and your moving needs to do it yourself. There are definite pros to doing it yourself involving cost, control and doing it on your timeline. So, if you do believe this is the right fit for you here’s some tips on how to complete the move effectively and efficiently.

  • Dissemble large items
  • Getting help from family or friends to help lift the heavy stuff
  • Pack heavier items at the bottom so lighter and/or more fragile items can sit on top
  • Making sure you have the right moving equipment, for example; a dolly or trolley
  • Safely secure all items and protect them with plastic tarp or blankets while in transit
  • Take breaks, drink lots of water and lift with your legs

The Hybrid Move

Stuck between deciding which removal technique is right for you; the hybrid move could be the right option for you.

The hybrid move combines both removalist companies and do-it-yourself truck/trailer hire, to suit all your moving requirements. If you are uneasy about moving large, heavy items than hiring a removalist company and then you have the option to transport your more precious, sentimental items yourself. Moving your personal items is a tough job, so tailoring your move to suit your needs can have the best outcome overall.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Self Storage

Staff at Permian Self Storage have put together this list of do’s and don’ts to help you plan your storage!

Do – Measure Before You Book a Self Storage Facility

Knowing how many items you need to put in storage is a must before booking your self storage space. Calculate and measure your space requirements because moving large furniture and having it not fit through the door only adds more time and effort to the move.

Do – Ensure Close Proximity to Your Home

When looking for a self storage facility, look for one that will be close to your home or office location as you want to ensure that it’s not too far away if you need to access your personal or business items on a regular basis. This will ensure convenience and reduce the stress of having your items in storage.

Do – Pack Your Items Correctly and Store Them Properly

Keep in mind the types of items you will be storing and ensure these are packed correctly – for example, don’t place heavy items on more fragile ones. If there are certain items you need to access regularly, keep these in an easy to access location in the self storage unit.

Don’t – Store Perishable Items

When looking to place items in storage, ensure you are aware of the things you are allowed to keep in there. Food will attract a lot of rodents and pests, which might, in turn, damage other items. Remember we have a hot summer! Humidity means mold grows easily while your goods are in storage. Reduce the incidence of mold forming, by cleaning and drying your goods when putting them in storage.

Don’t – Leave Your Storage Decision to the Last Minute

You need to select the right storage unit based on size, price and convenience and if you leave this to the last minute, you may not be able to effectively do this – it shouldn’t be a decision you rush into. Further, we may not have the right size for you, but if you call us early enough we can reserve one for 2 weeks for you at no extra charge.

Don’t – Move into a Storage Facility Without Insurance

Does your current home insurance policy cover personal items in storage? If not, we can provide you with insurance through Midlands Insurance starting from $19 per month (minimum 3 months payment). You don’t need to have insurance but we definitely recommend it.

Are you looking for help with selecting your self storage needs? Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.

We looking forward to hearing from you!

Preparing Your Car for Self Storage at Permian Wollongong

Preparing your car is vitally important to ensure it is ready to go when you return. Permian Self Storage have put together a checklist to help minimise overwhelm and to help you get the best from your vehicle.

1. Call Permian Self Storage

– Once you decide that you will need car storage in Wollongong, give Permian a call to reserve a parking space (subject to availability). We can hold units for up to 2 weeks with no deposit.

2. Keep it covered

– Preferably you can store your car in fully enclosed car garage however if that’s not an option, one of the easiest and most important things to do is put a cover over your car while it’s in storage. This will prevent sun damage and prevent dirt and leaves from building up in the crevices. You also need to ensure that the cover isn’t lose as this would lift up the debris and cause scratches on the paintwork over time.

3. Clean it

– It may seem counter intuitive to clean your car when your not going to use it for an extended period of time however this is also very important. Dirt buildup leads to rust and leaving the interior dirty can create unpleasant smells for when you return. Further, there’s nothing better than returning to a sparkling clean car!

4. Change the oil (long term)

– If you are leaving for more than a couple of months, drain and refill the oil so the dirty oil isn’t left sitting in the tank.

5. Fill the tank

– Do the same for the fuel tank if going for a long time. It also helps to have fuel in the tank for when you return.

6. Keep it charged

– If it’s an older car, you can disconnect the negative charge or purchase a trickle charger for a newer car which gives the battery just enough charge to prevent it from dying.

7. Don’t use the parking brake

– Keeping the parking brake on while you’re away will wear it down. Make sure you use wheel chocks to keep your car in place.

8. Keep pests out

– If you were to safely keep your car at Permian Self Storage we have regular pest control however you can never be too safe. Don’t forget to remove all foods and liquids from the car and put rags or tap in any holes to prevent bugs getting in.

9. If its an auto leave it in Park, manual leave it in gear

10. Mechanic’s advice

– Even though we have a lot of experience with storing vehicles, we are not mechanics and it is always best to check with one that you trust before doing anything further.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We looking forward to hearing from you!

Self Storage Solutions For Sentimental Items

Sometimes you need more storage solutions for sentimental items like souvenirs or heirlooms that you want to keep but there just isn’t enough room in the house. Starting at just $40 per month, self storage units with Permian Self Storage are the perfect solution to declutter your home. Keep reading to discover Permian’s staff tips for safely storing sentimental items!

1. Sort your sentimental items

– First things first, get all your items out and sort them into what you want to keep on display in the home, what you want to donate or throw out, and what you want to place into storage.

2. Keep your favourites on display at home, without the clutter

– Once you have decided on your favourite items, find a clutter-free way to put them on show around the home. Fragile items can be put in a display case. Or why not make a scrapbook or wall art of all your tickets and photos from around the world? That way visitors will easily be able to see what means most to you.

3. Pack away everything else safely, and with easy access

– There’s nothing worse than opening your storage unit to find a particular item and you have no idea where to start. To help combat this, store bulkier items in clear plastic boxes so you can easily see the contents at a glance. The lids snap tight to prevent them falling out if they fall over and stack on top of each other for easy storage. For fragile items, wrap them in bubble wrap which you can buy at Permian Self Storage. We would also recommend packing fragile clothing in vacuum-sealed bags.

4. Allow yourself plenty of time

– Sorting through sentimental items can be emotionally taxing if you are an empty nester or are sorting through a loved one’s old belongings. Having everything sorted into boxes labelled ‘rubbish’, ‘to store’, ‘to display’ as well as an ‘unsure’ box can take the pressure off deciding whether to keep or throw out. If you go through the ‘unsure’ box and display or throw out one more thing, it is a win.

5. Move into a storage unit at Permian Self Storage

– If you’re not quite ready to throw out anything just yet, or still don’t have enough space in the home after clearing, storage is the perfect solution for you. Once you have everything boxed up and ready to go, simply contact the friendly staff at Permian Self Storage in Wollongong and they will advise what size unit you will need. With units ranging from 1m3 to 55m3 (subject to availability), please don’t hesitate to contact us to find the perfect one for your needs.

Exciting New Facility Upgrade!

We have implemented a new sign-in system to enhance security here at the Permian self storage facility in Wollongong.
From now on a new automatic gate is in operation which is activated by individual pin-codes. This means that every client needs their own unique pin-code which replaces your old sign-in sheets.

From July 2019:

– Every client is expected to use their unique pin-code to access and leave the facility. If you do not have one by now, one will be generated for you and ID may be required before we give you that code.

Self Storage For Apartment Living

As cities are becoming more crowded and people are living closer together, self storage has become an even more popular option for apartment living. Wollongong has a population of almost 300,000 as of 2016 and is on the rise, meaning a higher demand for housing and increase of people living in apartments. Downsizing to a smaller apartment sometimes means becoming more minimal in your belongings, but doesn’t mean you always have to miss out on the things you love. Here’s why using a storage unit could transform a small living space and make the best of your apartment lifestyle.

1. Self Storage is Great for Seasonal Storage

Why let your snow gear take up room in your apartment when the Australian summer is blasting 40 degree days? The surf boards that are awkward and big don’t need to be taking up space in an already condensed living situation. Keep your apartment as a living space and utilise a storage unit as an external cupboard that stores the Christmas decorations, camping gear or even a surprise birthday present. At Permian Self Storage in Wollongong we have a range of small units that can hold from a couple of boxes up to a large walk in wardrobe size and bigger depending on your needs.

2. Self Storage Allows for Better Organisation

Having the extra space to see and organise your belongings allows you to better manage how you live life. It is proven that clutter can negatively effect your life and have serious impacts on your mental health through increased stress, unhealthy eating and loss of productivity (ABC NEWS). Apartment living already confines you to less space so it’s best to be proactive in your organisation. Divide your wardrobe, sort and store documents and be creative in how you use your space. Come talk to the team at Permian Self Storage and we can help you choose the space that suits you best.

3. Self Storage for Retirees

As you get older there isn’t a need for a big house anymore with many retirees choose to downsize their living situation and move into an apartment instead. A self storage unit is great for retirees living in apartments as it gives them a space to keep the sentimental belongings they’ve collected over the years and the things they need once in a while. For example, at Permian Self Storage some of our older customers keep their grandchildren’s toys and beds for when they come visit, or even utilize our parking spots for their caravan. Our facility is only 5 minutes from Wollongong CBD and makes for a great option for retirees needing a solution to the lack of storage in apartments.

4. Self Storage While Moving

A storage unit is also great whist you’re in between moves and possibly looking at downsizing to an apartment. It’s a great option if you still have items that you still need to get rid of, sell or sort through such as excess furniture and household items. At Permian we also have a truck that is free to use when moving in to our units and trailers that are free to use at any time. This allows the transition of moving and downsizing to apartment living much easier and give you time and the space you need in the rush and stresses of moving.

Want to see how a storage unit can change your apartment lifestyle? Come talk to our friendly staff at Permian Self Storage in Wollongong and we will be happy to help. Don’t hesitate to contact us!

Top 10 Tips For Moving Large Furniture

Moving large furniture can seem like an impossible task but we hope these tips below will help you move everything safely and easily. Here at Permian Self Storage in Wollongong we take the safety of our clients extremely seriously. It may seem easier to just call a costly removalist, but we will show you it is just as simple to do it yourself with a little help from your favourite self storage team!

1. Take precautions to prevent injury when moving large furniture

– Lift with your legs, not with your back
– Bend at the knees, not at the waist
– Wear clothing that won’t snag on corners
– Always wear enclosed shoes

2. Carry tall items high and low

– Make carrying tall book cases or cabinets a two-person job. Tilt the furniture backwards and have one person pick up the bottom while the other carries the top. This will centre it’s weight and stop it from swinging, which makes it easier to carry. This also makes going up and down stairs easier as it matches the angle of the stairs.

3. Hook chairs around corners

– Large chairs can be the hardest thing to transport even though it isn’t the heaviest. To move a large chair through doors simply turn it on its side so it looks like an “L” and then curl it around the door frame to make for simple moving. If you can, even remove the chair’s feet or the back.

4. Don’t carry large furniture, slide

– Slide your furniture instead of carrying it but make sure your floor is protected with towels or cardboard. This is so you don’t damage the floors or furniture.

5. Protect large furniture with blankets and plastic

– When packing ensure you invest in high-quality packing material. For large furniture you may choose to cover them in blankets but don’t forget about the damage they could cause to smaller, more fragile items while in the moving van. Store these items in sturdy double lined boxes and bubble wrap. At Permian we sell a range of moving boxes and materials.

6. Take apart as much of the large furniture as possible

– Bulky furniture such as beds and tables are much easier to move once they are disassembled. It may be more work to begin with but it is much easier to carry smaller elements. This also makes it easier to protect from damages with less chance of dropping and bumping.

7. Remove the door from its hinges

– No matter how many parts of a piece of large furniture you can remove, sometimes it just won’t go through the door. In this case, removing the door from its hinges is the easiest and best solution. You only need a screwdriver to remove the screws from the hinges.

8. Rent an affordable storage unit on the ground floor

– If you’ve decided to make the excellent choice of storing your furniture at Permian, you don’t have to go through the struggle of trying to push everything through a door frame. Simply ask our friendly staff to show you to an affordable storage unit on the ground floor which make the moving process even easier!

9. Ask for Permian Self Storage’s help

– You may not have been able to drag your brother-in-law or cousins to help you move but you are not alone! If you need help when moving large furniture and boxes upstairs to your rental unit our forklift drivers are more than happy to help. Don’t worry about booking, they’re on-site all day every day. We also have trolleys to help you roll everything throughout the storage facility. Staff are not available to physically move items themselves, only to transport items upstairs with the forklift.

10. Use our moving truck or trailers

– Don’t have a big car available when moving large furniture? That’s okay! Permian Self Storage has a truck free for move-ins complete with a trolley and ropes. Simply be over 25, have a drivers license and you are good to go! After the first move-in, truck use is available for $25 per hour + $0.35 per kilometer at a 2 hour minimum.
– Trailers are also available to clients free of charge at all times
