Organising Your Self Storage Unit

Organising-your-Self-Storage-Unit

If you need storage, the first thing that you should prioritise is the planning process – starting with sorting your items, labelling them appropriately, and stacking them to fit into the storage facility.

It is an effective way to maximise the available space and efficiently arrange your precious belongings.

As your items will be differing in shapes, sizes, weight, and fragility, organising them in a self-storage unit can be a tricky process. Below we have gathered some suggestions if you’re looking for the best storage facilities.

Create a functional layout

An empty self storage unit requires a functional layout to keep things from getting chaotic. Forming a plan on how to best create a functional layout for your storage unit is useful, as it will help you understand where your items are, without digging through everything.

If you’re moving to another house, for example, the layout will serve as your guide as to how you can segregate items for the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, and other parts of the house properly. Through this, organising items based on their necessity and own attributes becomes efficient and less time consuming.

If you need some help with creating an appropriate layout based on your storage needs, the friendly team at Permian Self Storage that offer self storage facility services in Wollongong can help.

Pick the right storage boxes

When choosing your storage boxes, it is important to consider their durability, resistance, as the aptness of their size. Picking the right storage box can actually save you so much space, and it helps you prioritise the fragile ones since you can simply group them together in sturdier boxes.

By choosing the right storage boxes and storing your items properly, you can definitely maximise the available space within your storage unit. The Permian Self Storage team have various storage boxes available for purchase. Contact them today for some friendly advice.

Invest in shelving units

Investing in a set of shelving units can help you make the most of your storage unit. They can help you with organising your smaller and more fragile items to avoid any damage, or making your larger, heavier items easier to reach. Shelving units are a good option if you intend on accessing the unit on a regular basis, making your trip to the storage unit a smoother process.

Don’t forget to Label

Putting labels on each item is highly important when organising your self-storage units. Not only does it offer convenience when you’re looking for a particular item, but it also allows you to keep track of your precious belongings. Aside from labelling your items, a better way to become aware of their condition is to regularly visit your storage unit. Given that, it is much better to select local storage units just within your area.

Get that plan started to ensure a well-organised storage unit! If you’re unsure or are having trouble getting your self-storage unit organised, Permian Self Storage in Wollongong is more than ready to help you out. Our expert staff is here to provide you with assistance to ensure a smooth self-storage experience.

Top 5 Tips For Packing And Storage

pack-and-storage

Whether you are going to move to another address or are planning the much-anticipated renovation or expansion of your home or office, you need to look for the best storage facilities to house your precious belongings. After all, your things are very valuable and some of them most likely hold a sentimental meaning.

When moving your belongings to your indoor storage unit, such as those provided by Permian Self Storage, you need to make sure that all your belongings are properly stored. In case you find yourself in need of some packing and storing tips, here are some that we’ve curated just for you!

1. Label each box as you pack

You will need to keep track of what’s being kept inside your boxes as you pack, that’s why labels should always be handy. Doing so lets you keep track of where your things belong, not only to benefit you but also to make things easier for other people who will help you in storing or organising your items in your public storage unit. Also, consider labelling more than one side so that is can be visible, regardless of how you pack your unit.

A quick tip, do not forget to write down fragile or breakable on your storage boxes. This will inform you and other people handling your storage boxes as to what to be extra careful with.

2. Use packaging materials

The best packaging materials to use for storing? Cartons, tape, and bubble wrap. Cartons or corrugated cardboards are best to use for carrying a wide variety of items, to protect objects inside against moisture, and to provide sustainable packaging solutions. Additionally, cartons are very customisable and quite cost-effective.

Meanwhile, with tape, the best type to use for moving boxes inside storage units is shipping tape, for its thin and sturdy form that’s water-resistant and very sticky, masking tape for labelling, and duct tape for reinforcing heavy boxes.

Lastly, for highly fragile and breakable items, it is recommended that bubble wrap be used in order to provide your items with the necessary cushion that will prevent them from getting damaged.

3. Do not overfill boxes

Make sure that you only fill your boxes to their optimal capacity. Overfilling will likely damage the items inside it, and you would not like your things to get all smashed up, right? Make sure you only fill your boxes to their optimal capacity as overfilling may be likely to cause damage to your precious belongings packed inside. To make sure that all your boxes are properly filled and that you have enough room for your things, prepare an extra number of storage boxes. It also helps to choose a spacious self-storage facility that will enable you to add more storage boxes if necessary.

4. Pack heavy items in smaller boxes

A common misconception is that heavy items should be packed in larger boxes. That is not true, and it can be very impractical. Since the item’s mass compromises the integrity and stability of a box, using large boxes will just make it difficult for the movers to carry it, increasing the risk of it causing injuries or getting damaged itself. For the safety of your things as well as the movers that will assist you, go with more compact storage boxes for your larger or heavier items.

5 . Pack books flat

Did you know that arranging your books with the spine facing the bottom causes damage to the binding? Your books, being great holders of knowledge and memories, need to be packed properly.

First off, choose quality boxes to pack your books in and make sure these boxes have not been used to store food and other perishables. Then, lay your books flat with the heavier ones at the bottom and the lighter ones at the top. If you see some spaces between the books, you can use bubble wrap to fill the gaps and prevent them from getting tossed around.

If you need more informative tips about storing and packaging, feel free to send Permian Self Storage in Wollongong a message today. We provide local storage units that are secure, clean, and dry servicing the areas of Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Keiraville, Gwynneville & Mt Ousley.

Renting a self storage facility is definitely a great idea if you need a space to keep your things safe while you move house or plan on refurbishing your office.

You would want to fit all that you can in your chosen storage facility to make the most of your rental, but before you can do that, you need to know how to maximise the space in your storage unit.

Here are some reminders to keep in mind so that you utilise your storage spaces efficiently:

Plan each space

Planning helps you determine the purpose of each available space. Through this, you are able to map out where to put the larger boxes, furniture, unused equipment, electronics, and so on. Also, using uniform-sized storage boxes where it’s applicable can help you stack your things more easily.

If you’re struggling with assigning places for your items, there are trusted companies such as Permian Self Storage in Wollongong that offers expert assistance for choosing for the best storage facilities suited to your specific needs.

Be creative

Another important factor if you want to maximise your space is creativity. This allows you to balance your need for storage and the ability to make use of your items. If there are shelves and cabinets, you can store small items inside them rather than place them inside other boxes which will cost you more space. You can also make use of the walls of the indoor storage units to hang your items.

Create personalised divisions

Putting divisions inside your public storage space is helpful in many ways. First, it makes things more convenient when you’re looking for specific items that are urgently needed. Second, it allows you to properly categorise your items based on their characteristics. Third, it gives you a feeling of being organised in storing all your items. Lastly, divisions help you in maximising space in your storage unit since you are made to re-evaluate what you really need to store as you categorise them.

When experiencing difficulty with allocating places for your items, you can get help from companies such as Permian Self Storage. They don’t only provide you with a self storage facility in Wollongong, they can help you get your things properly sorted as well.

Disassemble large items

There are lots of options to maximise space in your storage unit. Just stay creative and resourceful. You probably have other ideas to consider when you plan without racing against time.

Plastic vs Cardboard Boxes When Moving

plastic-and-cardboard-boxes

On your search for the most reliable self-storage facility when moving, a common question that comes up is what type of boxes you should use for storage and organisation?

When you don’t pack things correctly, things inside can end up broken, moulded, or pretty useless.

Your local self storage facility in Wollongong does not want you to experience this, so we’ve prepared a guide on what’s best when it comes to plastic and cardboard containers when storing and organising items.

Which is the best one for you? To answer that, here are some things to consider.

Plastic Boxes

In comparison to cardboard boxes, plastic boxes are known for their full resistance to water. Since water causes dampness and extra moisture to some materials, keeping things inside plastic containers will diminish the chances of finding mould on objects such as clothing.

The use of plastic boxes also keeps your things from protected. So when you arrange boxes in an indoor storage unit, you won’t have to worry about finding your items damaged.

Plastic boxes can also be useful to organise things when being stored. How? Create labels for your boxes in various colours and use this to your advantage. Categorise the contents of the boxes by label colour, for example:

  • Red – clothing
  • Blue – kitchen and dining sets
  • Yellow – books and stationery
  • Green – decorative items
  • Pink – miscellaneous

Moreover, plastic boxes come with lids. These boxes do not need to be taped in order to make sure that nothing penetrates the items kept inside.

Cardboard Boxes

Plastic containers are indeed useful, however they have a downside: they are non-biodegradable. They’re less environmentally-friendly compared to cardboard boxes.

Compared to plastic containers, cardboard boxes are best to use when moving items. If your chosen local storage units are a little far, it will be easier for you to transport them using cartons.

Also, cardboard boxes are very simple and easy to utilise. You just need tape such as duct tape or packaging tape to seal them in well. To label these boxes, you just need to write on them with your marker.

Which Boxes should you choose?

There will be lots of factors that will affect your decision. Based on our many years of experience with storage, we prefer cardboard boxes and the many benefits they provide to both our customers and the environment.

If you ever need assistance with cardboard boxes for your storage needs, Permian Self Storage in Wollongong would be more than glad to help. Contact the team today.

Time

Above everything, make sure you are able to make an ample amount of time for planning, inventory, arranging the items, labelling items based on their details, and looking for a reliable self storage facility. The Do’s and Don’ts of Self Storage

self-storage-tips

Staff at Permian Self Storage have put together this list of do’s and don’ts to help you plan your storage!

Do – Measure Before You Book a Self Storage Facility

Knowing how many items you need to put in storage is a must before booking your self storage space. Calculate and measure your space requirements because moving large furniture and having it not fit through the door only adds more time and effort to the move.

Do – Ensure Close Proximity to Your Home

When looking for a self storage facility, look for one that will be close to your home or office location as you want to ensure that it’s not too far away if you need to access your personal or business items on a regular basis. This will ensure convenience and reduce the stress of having your items in storage.

Do – Pack Your Items Correctly and Store Them Properly

Keep in mind the types of items you will be storing and ensure these are packed correctly – for example, don’t place heavy items on more fragile ones. If there are certain items you need to access regularly, keep these in an easy to access location in the self storage unit.

Don’t – Store Perishable Items

When looking to place items in storage, ensure you are aware of the things you are allowed to keep in there. Food will attract a lot of rodents and pests, which might, in turn, damage other items. Remember we have a hot summer! Humidity means mold grows easily while your goods are in storage. Reduce the incidence of mold forming, by cleaning and drying your goods when putting them in storage.

Don’t – Leave Your Storage Decision to the Last Minute

You need to select the right storage unit based on size, price and convenience and if you leave this to the last minute, you may not be able to effectively do this – it shouldn’t be a decision you rush into. Further, we may not have the right size for you, but if you call us early enough we can reserve one for 2 weeks for you at no extra charge.

Don’t – Move into a Storage Facility Without Insurance

Does your current home insurance policy cover personal items in storage? If not, we can provide you with insurance through Midlands Insurance starting from $19 per month (minimum 3 months payment). You don’t need to have insurance but we definitely recommend it.

Are you looking for help with selecting your self storage needs? Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
