Preparing Your Car for Self Storage at Permian Wollongong

Whether you’re going on holidays or received a temporary job offer interstate, most of us will need car storage in Wollongong at some point. Preparing your car is vitally important to ensure it is ready to go when you return. Permian Self Storage have put together a checklist to help minimise overwhelm and to help you get the best from your vehicle.

1. Call Permian Self Storage

– Once you decide that you will need car storage in Wollongong, give Permian a call to reserve a parking space (subject to availability). We can hold units for up to 2 weeks with no deposit.

2. Keep it covered

– Preferably you can store your car in fully enclosed car garage however if that’s not an option, one of the easiest and most important things to do is put a cover over your car while it’s in storage. This will prevent sun damage and prevent dirt and leaves from building up in the crevices. You also need to ensure that the cover isn’t lose as this would lift up the debris and cause scratches on the paintwork over time.

3. Clean it

– It may seem counter intuitive to clean your car when your not going to use it for an extended period of time however this is also very important. Dirt buildup leads to rust and leaving the interior dirty can create unpleasant smells for when you return. Further, there’s nothing better than returning to a sparkling clean car!

4. Change the oil (long term)

– If you are leaving for more than a couple of months, drain and refill the oil so the dirty oil isn’t left sitting in the tank.

5. Fill the tank

– Do the same for the fuel tank if going for a long time. It also helps to have fuel in the tank for when you return.

6. Keep it charged

– If it’s an older car, you can disconnect the negative charge or purchase a trickle charger for a newer car which gives the battery just enough charge to prevent it from dying.

7. Don’t use the parking brake

– Keeping the parking brake on while you’re away will wear it down. Make sure you use wheel chocks to keep your car in place.

8. Keep pests out

– If you were to safely keep your car at Permian Self Storage we have regular pest control however you can never be too safe. Don’t forget to remove all foods and liquids from the car and put rags or tap in any holes to prevent bugs getting in.

9. If its an auto leave it in Park, manual leave it in gear

10. Mechanic’s advice

– Even though we have a lot of experience with storing vehicles, we are not mechanics and it is always best to check with one that you trust before doing anything further.

Exciting New Facility Upgrade!

We have implemented a new sign-in system to enhance security here at the Permian self storage facility in Wollongong.
From now on a new automatic gate is in operation which is activated by individual pin-codes. This means that every client needs their own unique pin-code which replaces your old sign-in sheets.

From July 2019:

– Every client is expected to use their unique pin-code to access and leave the facility. If you do not have one by now, one will be generated for you and ID may be required before we give you that code.
– If more than one person will be regularly accessing the unit or parking space, they will need their own pin-code.
– Please ensure your access list is updated. If someone comes in to the facility without a pin-code and they are not on your access list, they will be denied access.
– Access hours will remain the same.
– Staff (and the lollies) will still be in the office during business hours if you need help, would like a chat or cup of tea!

Please remember that this gate has been built to enhance security for both Permian and for yourself. You will no longer be able to drive-in without being recorded.

Self Storage For Apartment Living

As cities are becoming more crowded and people are living closer together, self storage has become an even more popular option for apartment living. Wollongong has a population of almost 300,000 as of 2016 and is on the rise, meaning a higher demand for housing and increase of people living in apartments. Downsizing to a smaller apartment sometimes means becoming more minimal in your belongings, but doesn’t mean you always have to miss out on the things you love. Here’s why using a storage unit could transform a small living space and make the best of your apartment lifestyle.

1. Self Storage is Great for Seasonal Storage

Why let your snow gear take up room in your apartment when the Australian summer is blasting 40 degree days? The surf boards that are awkward and big don’t need to be taking up space in an already condensed living situation. Keep your apartment as a living space and utilise a storage unit as an external cupboard that stores the Christmas decorations, camping gear or even a surprise birthday present. At Permian Self Storage in Wollongong we have a range of small units that can hold from a couple of boxes up to a large walk in wardrobe size and bigger depending on your needs.

2. Self Storage Allows for Better Organisation

Having the extra space to see and organise your belongings allows you to better manage how you live life. It is proven that clutter can negatively effect your life and have serious impacts on your mental health through increased stress, unhealthy eating and loss of productivity (ABC NEWS). Apartment living already confines you to less space so it’s best to be proactive in your organisation. Divide your wardrobe, sort and store documents and be creative in how you use your space. Come talk to the team at Permian Self Storage and we can help you choose the space that suits you best.

3. Self Storage for Retirees

As you get older there isn’t a need for a big house anymore with many retirees choose to downsize their living situation and move into an apartment instead. A self storage unit is great for retirees living in apartments as it gives them a space to keep the sentimental belongings they’ve collected over the years and the things they need once in a while. For example, at Permian Self Storage some of our older customers keep their grandchildren’s toys and beds for when they come visit, or even utilize our parking spots for their caravan. Our facility is only 5 minutes from Wollongong CBD and makes for a great option for retirees needing a solution to the lack of storage in apartments.

4. Self Storage While Moving

A storage unit is also great whist you’re in between moves and possibly looking at downsizing to an apartment. It’s a great option if you still have items that you still need to get rid of, sell or sort through such as excess furniture and household items. At Permian we also have a truck that is free to use when moving in to our units and trailers that are free to use at any time. This allows the transition of moving and downsizing to apartment living much easier and give you time and the space you need in the rush and stresses of moving.

Want to see how a storage unit can change your apartment lifestyle? Come talk to our friendly staff at Permian Self Storage in Wollongong and we will be happy to help. Don’t hesitate to contact us!

Top 10 Tips For Moving Large Furniture

Moving large furniture can seem like an impossible task but we hope these tips below will help you move everything safely and easily. Here at Permian Self Storage in Wollongong we take the safety of our clients extremely seriously. It may seem easier to just call a costly removalist, but we will show you it is just as simple to do it yourself with a little help from your favourite self storage team!

1. Take precautions to prevent injury when moving large furniture

– Lift with your legs, not with your back
– Bend at the knees, not at the waist
– Wear clothing that won’t snag on corners
– Always wear enclosed shoes

2. Carry tall items high and low

– Make carrying tall book cases or cabinets a two-person job. Tilt the furniture backwards and have one person pick up the bottom while the other carries the top. This will centre it’s weight and stop it from swinging, which makes it easier to carry. This also makes going up and down stairs easier as it matches the angle of the stairs.

3. Hook chairs around corners

– Large chairs can be the hardest thing to transport even though it isn’t the heaviest. To move a large chair through doors simply turn it on its side so it looks like an “L” and then curl it around the door frame to make for simple moving. If you can, even remove the chair’s feet or the back.

4. Don’t carry large furniture, slide

– Slide your furniture instead of carrying it but make sure your floor is protected with towels or cardboard. This is so you don’t damage the floors or furniture.

5. Protect large furniture with blankets and plastic

– When packing ensure you invest in high-quality packing material. For large furniture you may choose to cover them in blankets but don’t forget about the damage they could cause to smaller, more fragile items while in the moving van. Store these items in sturdy double lined boxes and bubble wrap. At Permian we sell a range of moving boxes and materials.

6. Take apart as much of the large furniture as possible

– Bulky furniture such as beds and tables are much easier to move once they are disassembled. It may be more work to begin with but it is much easier to carry smaller elements. This also makes it easier to protect from damages with less chance of dropping and bumping.

7. Remove the door from its hinges

– No matter how many parts of a piece of large furniture you can remove, sometimes it just won’t go through the door. In this case, removing the door from its hinges is the easiest and best solution. You only need a screwdriver to remove the screws from the hinges.

8. Rent an affordable storage unit on the ground floor

– If you’ve decided to make the excellent choice of storing your furniture at Permian, you don’t have to go through the struggle of trying to push everything through a door frame. Simply ask our friendly staff to show you to an affordable storage unit on the ground floor which make the moving process even easier!

9. Ask for Permian Self Storage’s help

– You may not have been able to drag your brother-in-law or cousins to help you move but you are not alone! If you need help when moving large furniture and boxes upstairs to your rental unit our forklift drivers are more than happy to help. Don’t worry about booking, they’re on-site all day every day. We also have trolleys to help you roll everything throughout the storage facility. Staff are not available to physically move items themselves, only to transport items upstairs with the forklift.

10. Use our moving truck or trailers

– Don’t have a big car available when moving large furniture? That’s okay! Permian Self Storage has a truck free for move-ins complete with a trolley and ropes. Simply be over 25, have a drivers license and you are good to go! After the first move-in, truck use is available for $25 per hour + $0.35 per kilometer at a 2 hour minimum.
– Trailers are also available to clients free of charge at all times
